Iva Galen Adventures

BOOK

What happens when you mix one super-powered teenage girl, two special agents, a pissed-off ex-best friend, a pretty boy, and a DC menagerie? You get a cabal traveling headlong into a path of potential carnage. At least that's how Iva Galen, the girl plagued with the superpower, felt about the sudden attention turned in her direction.

Iva had spent the past two years desperately trying not to die as her power dragged her from one end of the planet to another to serve as a whiplashed paladin. And all she had to show for it was the death of her friendships, two very stressed-out parents, and only a tiny pool of people slightly better off because of her power. There had been a bright spot, though, a gorgeous stranger who had shut her powers down for over three months. But now he was back in her life with the scarier parts of the government behind him, asking questions she didn't want to answer. On top of that, her former best friend's current snogging partner had seen something he should not have and was dogging her heels. Iva was sure she wouldn't make it to graduation at this rate, especially since she was barely surviving Ms. Butler's physics class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!

Iva was smart, funny, and quick thinking on her feet. I loved the interactions between her and her family and friends. The addition of James and Landry was great, and I can't wait to find out what other adventures they get to in future sequels. I really want to know who else has powers and if she's going to join forces with others to stop this mysterious evil!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

IMG_1395_edited.jpg

I've been advised to compose a BIO to engage with readers. To me, this is a tall order. Condensing my identity into a few captivating words to engage readers in my book is an intimidating undertaking. That, and I hate talking about myself. Or, to be more precise, I hate selling myself. Putting that neurotic thinking aside, I'm also not sure where to begin. Besides writing about fictional worlds, I'm a mother, wife, lawyer, and pushover for my pets. But that's just who I am today. In the past, I've been a Waffle House waitress, a landscape worker, a truck driver, and a soldier. While I'm unsure if any of those jobs, roles, or personality traits endear me to any of you, they are

undeniably part of who I am.

Of course, none of that gives any insight into why I wrote Have Power, Must Travel. It's pretty simple. My life got harder than my admittedly slow brain could keep up with. Nobody wants to hear the details, and I'm not quite narcissistic enough to think my life is harder than anyone else's. To cope with this new level of difficulty (I dedicate that passage to my gamer son who is currently light-sabering his way through Bohemian Rhapsody in virtual reality right in front of me), I wrote. For a long time, I contemplated a story featuring a girl with superpowers. I know, I know, a girl with superpowers, so original (said with dripping sarcasm). There are so many entertaining books now about girls with supernatural abilities, and I'm jealous I didn't have them to read growing up. I didn't aim to imitate any of them, yet I reserve true originality for the geniuses. Also, as a reader, I enjoy stories that remind me of stories I've read in the past.

Back to my story, for my girl, whom I gave the moniker Iva Galen (forgive me for the name, I hate picking names, and mostly just steal names from people I know), I didn't want her to face off again and again against a bunch of different supervillains. Instead, I wanted her to be grounded in the real world. This meant no ridiculous skintight suit that would no doubt chaff. And breaking from comic books, and Disney's overrated, overdone troupes, I didn't want her to be an orphan. Iva had to have a strong family presence because family always adds another layer of endless complications. This doesn't mean she is a normal, well-adjusted member of society, because you have to write what you know, and I don't know anyone like that. Iva is a mystery, both to herself and others. This character trait stems not only from her power but also from her unpredictable actions. Even Iva herself is often unsure of her actions until she takes them.

While I was writing Have Power, Must Travel, I couldn't help but fold in parts of my life. In one scene, Iva's little brother has staged a battle with his dinosaur and superhero toys. The family cat Zizzle has stationed herself under a piece of nearby furniture to take paw swipes at the battle. My son set up his toys many times in this same arrangement and our cat Zizzle (I told you I hate coming up with names) loves to hide under furniture and swipe at any feet that venture into her territory. These scenes are among my favorites in the book. This comes from my love of stories that have these everyday moments that help you picture the characters as real people.

I'm excited to write more adventures for Iva and the other characters, and I hope you will feel the some about reading them.
